Birth from within with birth art workshops
Birth art is a gentle exploration for pregnant women to explore their inner landscape of the experience of birth and the coming of labour and birth. These workshops last two hours. Birthing from within helps women realise, release unhelpful/unfounded beliefs about birth, making space for inner resilience.

About Birth Art Workshops
Birth art is a creative and therapeutic practice that involves using art to explore feelings, experiences, and beliefs about pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. Pioneered by Pam England, a midwife, childbirth educator and author of *Birthing From Within*, birth art is not about artistic skill or creating perfect pieces but about self-expression, self-discovery, and emotional preparation for birth.
Key Concepts of Birth Art
Birth art encourages parents—especially mothers—to use artistic mediums like drawing and/or sculpting to express your thoughts and emotions about childbirth. It helps you engage with your inner experiences in a non-verbal, intuitive way.
By engaging in birth art you can process fears, hopes, and anxieties about childbirth in a safe, non-judgmental space. It helps uncover hidden emotions, beliefs, or cultural conditioning that may impact your birthing experience.
Birth art often reflects personal or generational birth stories. It can help you explore how these stories shape your expectations and attitudes toward birth.
Pam England in her experience of working with thousand parents found that birth art empowers parents by reconnecting them with their inner strength, instincts, and the transformative nature of birth. The process fosters confidence and trust in the body’s ability to give birth.
How do Birth Art sessions work?
In Birth art sessions we use chalk pastels or clay as a medium of expressing as it is easy to use and effective for a short process. You will be prompted to draw on themes of pregnancy or becoming a parent and after about 15 minutes you will be invited to write about your experience in your journal. Towards the last part of the session there will be time to reflect and share for whoever feels drawn to. You do not have to show your artwork unless you want to. The focus isn’t the artwork but what you were able to process that was helpful for you.
You don’t have to have an interest or be good at ART to join these sessions. On the contrary, this is about accessing the right side of the brain that you access during labour and birth. In this space you rely mostly on instinctual ways of knowing. In this sense Birth Art is a way to become resilient and resourceful for childbirth.
How Birth Art sessions can support you?
* Challenge and reframe fears or unrealistic expectations.
* Cultivate mindfulness and acceptance of the unpredictable nature of birth.
* Release stress and gain a deeper calm as you draw and reflect during the process.
* It can help you uncover and address subconscious thoughts about birth.
* For some of you, birth art may connect you to your cultural or spiritual traditions surrounding childbirth.
I would definitely do it again and recommend it to anyone considering it.
