Honouring
Menarche

Menarche—the first menstrual cycle—is a profound rite of passage, marking a girl’s transition into womanhood. In many cultures, this moment is honored with ceremonies, rituals, and teachings to welcome the young girls into womanhood with pride, knowledge, and support.

Why is it important to honour Menarche
In today’s world, menstruation is often met with shame, secrecy, and indifference yet in many traditions, it is a time of celebration and empowerment and for very good reasons. Honoring menarche helps young girls:

🌿 Feel confident and connected to their changing bodies.
🌿 Develop a positive relationship with their cycle and their body.
🌿 Receive guidance and wisdom from the women around them and much more.

Here are some menarche Rituals Around the World
✨ Native American Traditions – Some tribes hold coming-of-age ceremonies where girls retreat, learn from elders, and receive symbolic blessings.
✨ India – In certain regions, families celebrate with feasts and gifts, marking the girl’s transition with joy.
✨ Japan – Some families share a red bean rice dish, symbolizing good fortune and fertility.
✨ Bali – Girls partake in purification rituals to welcome this new life stage with grace.

Honoring menarche doesn’t have to be elaborate—it can be as simple as a special gathering, journaling, a meaningful gift, or heartfelt words from a mother or mentor.

By reclaiming menarche as a time of pride and empowerment, we help the next generation step into womanhood with strength, wisdom, and self-love.

Sacred Beginings Workshop

For mothers guiding daughters through menarche

A two-part online workshop to support mothers as they guide their daughters through the sacred transition of menarche.

Menarche—the first menstrual cycle—is more than just a physical milestone. It marks the beginning of a new phase in a girl’s life, one that deserves to be met with understanding, support, and celebration.

For many of us, menarche was not honored—it may have been met with silence, embarrassment, or even shame. Now, as mothers, we have the opportunity to revisit and reconnect with this phase from a expanded and empowering place in us.

Session 1
- The physical, mental, and emotional changes during menarche - How and why menarche has been honored across cultures for centuries - The role of ritual and celebration in shaping a girl's experience - Revisiting your own menarche: What was missing? What would have helped?

Session 2 - The impact of supportive, shame-free conversations about menstruation - Exploring different ways to honour menarche—from simple gestures to deeper rituals - Reimagining how you would have liked to be welcomed into this transition - Knowing what you do now, how would you approach your daughter's sacred beginnings.
