Discovering the Wisdom of the Menstrual Cycle
For much of my life, my menstrual cycle was simply something that happened.
A monthly event that came and went quietly, something to manage — but not to understand.
My menarche arrived without context or conversation. No one spoke of what it meant, or of the cyclical intelligence unfolding inside me. It was private, even secret. And like many women, I absorbed that silence as normal.
Years later, when I came across Red School — The Leading Menstruality School, something in me stirred awake. I began to realise that my menstrual cycle wasn’t just about bleeding. It was a whole inner rhythm — a dance of energy, emotion, and creativity that had always been there, waiting to be heard.
I remember feeling both awe and grief.
Awe for this incredible design — the way the body mirrors the seasons of the Earth — and grief for how little I had known about it.
And as I started listening to other women’s menarche stories, I discovered I wasn’t alone. So many of us began our menstrual journeys in silence — with minimal understanding and no sense of celebration.
The Cycle as a Source of Wisdom
Our menstrual cycle is not a linear inconvenience; it’s a rhythmic guide.
It moves through four distinct phases — like inner seasons — each offering its own gifts and invitations:
🌑 Menstruation (Inner Winter): Rest, release, reflection. A time to slow down and listen deeply.
🌱 Follicular Phase (Inner Spring): New energy, creativity, and curiosity begin to bloom.
🌕 Ovulation (Inner Summer): Confidence, connection, and outward expression peak.
🍂 Luteal Phase (Inner Autumn): Turning inward, refining, and letting go of what no longer fits.
When we begin to pay attention, we notice how our body and emotions flow through these natural rhythms. What once felt like inconsistency becomes clarity. There’s relief in understanding that we are cyclical beings — not meant to be the same every day.
Why Tracking Matters
Tracking your cycle is not about control; it’s about relationship.
It’s a way of coming home to your body — of learning its language, day by day.
When you track your cycle, you begin to:
Recognise your energy patterns — when you thrive, create, rest, or reflect.
Anticipate what your body needs — instead of judging your changing moods or energy.
Honour your natural ebb and flow — aligning your life more closely with what feels supportive.
Build trust — in your body’s signals, in your timing, in your wisdom.
The more you listen, the more your body reveals.
Over time, this awareness brings not only balance, but also a quiet kind of empowerment — the confidence that comes from truly knowing yourself.
A Return to Connection
For me, learning to track and honour my cycle has become a form of healing — a way to rewrite the story of silence I grew up with.
It’s an ongoing conversation with my body, one that continues to teach me about rest, intuition, boundaries, and power.
When we as women begin to reconnect with our cyclical nature, something beautiful happens:
we move from self-judgment to self-understanding, from control to collaboration, from separation to belonging.
Your menstrual cycle is not just a monthly occurrence — it’s your body’s way of keeping time with life itself.
And when you listen, you may find it has been guiding you all along.
